November Job Growth Report: U.S. Adds 263,000 Jobs
Midway through the final quarter of the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported November as the 23rd consecutive month of job growth in the United States despite continuing speculation over an impending recession.
With 263,000 new jobs added in the U.S. throughout November, it remains to be seen if the end of 2022 will close out with another month of growth in December.
Is the U.S. job market growing right now?
With major corporations like Amazon and Meta conducting mass layoffs in November, there is speculation as to whether or not this will affect the job market overall. However, with unemployment hanging tight at 3.7% and the new jobs rate increasing month over month, the job market seems to still be on the upswing.
U.S. unemployment rates by group:
- Adult women: 3.4%
- Adult men: 3.3%
- Teenagers: 11.3%
- Whites: 3.2%
- Blacks: 5.7%
- Asians: 2.7%
- Hispanics: 3.9%
Additional employment statistics for November 2022:
- Among the unemployed, the number of permanent job losers rose by 127,000 in November.
- The number of persons not in the labor force who currently want a job dipped slightly to 5.6 in November.
- The number of individuals employed part-time for economic reasons was at 3.7 million in November.
- Job growth has averaged 392,000 per month so far in 2022, compared with 562,000 per month in 2021.
U.S. industries with notable job growth in November
Leisure and hospitality
After a slight dip in October, the leisure and hospitality sector added 88,000 new jobs.
62,000 of these jobs were in the food services and drinking establishment sub-sector. Despite these gains, the leisure and hospitality industry is below its pre-pandemic, February 2020 level by 980,000, or 5.8 percent overall.
Health care job growth
The health care industry continued to grow in November, adding 45,000 jobs.
Most notably, ambulatory health care services accounted for 23,000 of these jobs while hospital jobs accounted for 11,000 jobs.
Government
Government jobs added 43,000 in November with 32,000 of those being in local government positions.
Although government employment has increased by an average of 25,000 per month, government jobs are down by 2.0% compared to February 2020 pre-pandemic levels.
