Job Title: Content Strategy Lead - Freelance Project Overview
This is a senior-level Individual Contributor (IC) role to lead the content strategy and for a complex set of websites and microsites. This is a leadership role for a systems thinker who effectively bridges the gap between editorial vision, user experience, and technical execution.
This role uses a hybrid model that starts with heavy collaboration between content strategy and UX/UI during the discovery and design phases (using tools like Miro and Figma), and then shifts to collaboration with creative and tech teams during the build phase.
Collaboration Model
Content and UX integration: You'll partner closely with strategy and UX teams throughout the project, collaborating on deliverables like audits, recommendations, navigation, and design.
Creative collaboration: You'll collaborate closely with creative copywriters to ensure the content itself meets client requirements, digital UX writing best practices, and regulatory requirements.
Tech collaboration: You'll collaborate closely with tech to ensure tech understands any content requirements, content is structured for CMS, and structured to support any functionality. You'll may also collaborate on foundational taxonomy
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
Content Strategy and Design
Guide Strategic Vision: Apply extensive knowledge in content strategy, user experience, and UX best practices to evaluate content, content experiences, and content structures to identify opportunities for improvement and drive the strategic vision for the project.
Lead Information Architecture (IA): Oversee the discovery, definition, and design, including sitemaps, labeling systems, and collaborate with UX on navigation flows.
Design content models: Created detailed content models using tools like Miro that are granular enough to serve as wireframes, allowing UX/UI to go directly into prototyping and UI design.
Back-end/technical content strategy
Structure content for COPE, AEO/GEO/SEO, and AI readiness: Structure, modularize, and tag content pieces so they are machine-readable and optimized for Create Once, Publish Everywhere (COPE) and search frameworks.
Build taxonomies: Build and maintain taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and tagging strategies that power dynamic content, site search, personalization engines, and AI-driven content recommendations.
Content Creation and Operations
Guide content creation: Provide direction to UX writers and content creators, ensuring adherence to digital and SEO best practices. Create digital style guides as needed.
Prepare content for production: Ensure content is created in preferred formats like copy decks or spreadsheets, reviewed and routed internally, packaged for external review, and prepared for handover to production.
Governance: Define and optimize content workflows, roles, and permissions at both the organizational macro level and micro levels within the CMS.
Data-driven optimization: Leverage research and analytics to evaluate content performance, identify high-value opportunities, and drive content optimization.
Qualifications
8 years of experience: Extensive background in digital content strategy, with a majority in an agency model working in regulated industries like pharma, healthcare, technology, or financial services.
Proven leadership: Experience managing cross-functional teams of content strategists, UX designers, and writers in fast-paced environments.
Technical mastery: Deep understanding of content modeling, COPE strategies, and enterprise CMS platforms such as Sitecore, AEM, Drupal, or other headless environments.
UX foundation: Solid foundation in user experience principles and experience collaborating on traditional UX activities like user journey mapping and navigation.
Modern SEO knowledge: Comfortable implementing SEO strategy and keyword best practices, as well as familiarity with AI-generated search (AEO/GEO) strategy.
AI fluency: Willingness to use and expand knowledge of AI tools for content at scale, automation, and Agentic AI workflows
